Bessemer Revitalization

Both of my parents are from Bessemer Alabama and a larger portion of my family still lives in that area. Sitting between Birmingham and an up-and-coming city like McCalla, Bessemer is poised for a wonderful revitalization. I feel that the first area of concern should be the Bessemer City Center. Every effort should be made to give the residents of Bessemer every modern convenience they deserve while attracting new businesses and home buyers. A multi-use condo/townhome development, sustainably built, could be the catalyst. It just has to be designed well and incorporate green features. Innovation should lead the design process as well as a thorough assessment of future transit needs.

Latest Ideas

1. West End Learning Lab: Utilize the old Tuscaloosa Avenue Public Library as a new media learning lab focusing on computer learning, math and problem solving skills. Could be used as flexible space for adult learning/GED classes and community events.

2. Capoeira Club: Develop a coalition of breakdancers and other martial artists to train two Saturdays out of each month at ICAF Atlanta with the goal of bring Capoeira to Birmingham on a permanent basis.

3. Downtown Bessemer Revitalization: More on that later.
