Bessemer Revitalization

Both of my parents are from Bessemer Alabama and a larger portion of my family still lives in that area. Sitting between Birmingham and an up-and-coming city like McCalla, Bessemer is poised for a wonderful revitalization. I feel that the first area of concern should be the Bessemer City Center. Every effort should be made to give the residents of Bessemer every modern convenience they deserve while attracting new businesses and home buyers. A multi-use condo/townhome development, sustainably built, could be the catalyst. It just has to be designed well and incorporate green features. Innovation should lead the design process as well as a thorough assessment of future transit needs.

Latest Ideas

1. West End Learning Lab: Utilize the old Tuscaloosa Avenue Public Library as a new media learning lab focusing on computer learning, math and problem solving skills. Could be used as flexible space for adult learning/GED classes and community events.

2. Capoeira Club: Develop a coalition of breakdancers and other martial artists to train two Saturdays out of each month at ICAF Atlanta with the goal of bring Capoeira to Birmingham on a permanent basis.

3. Downtown Bessemer Revitalization: More on that later.

Latest Ideas.

1. Lazer Tag - Qzar type business that includes two labs for free PC or Xbox 360 LAN games.

2. Pump it Up style business focused on adults similar to the show Wipeout or American Galdiators.

3. Cloud-type home computer system that connects to a NAS system for the OS. Each client would have a keyboard and screen and connect through wifi. Or it could just be tablet style with a virtual keyboard.

Apple Youth Workshops: Garage Band '09

My nephew and I attended one of Apple's Jam Music sessions, since both him and I are interested in music production. One of the coolest things about the workshop was that they give each kid a free CD of their own music track that each of them created in Apple's new Garage Band '09 software. The software is great, and very easy to use. I did purchase a copy and I'll talk about it in future posts. I'll post the track as soon as I figure out how. :-)
